Reformed Whore: Grand Ole C*ntry (Sweet Grassmarket, 21.50)

A hilarious blend of country and comedy that would make your grandmother blush, Reformed Whores: Grand Ole C*ntry is exactly the sort of comedy show you’d expect to go along with such a title. Armed with songs devoted to defecation, drunk dialling, and the benefits of birth control, Katy and Marie (the titular “Reformed Whores”) take their audience on a journey of sexual exploits and outrageous adventures. In between songs, the ‘southern-bred but NYC-based’ duo try and educate themselves more about “Edin-berg”, even going so far as to ask the audience if Scotland is familiar with the word “taint” (they had previously been informed that it wasn’t) so that their audience didn’t miss out on any of the jokes due to misunderstanding.

Noise pollution was always going to be an issue, competing directly with the Tattoo, and the fireworks that come along with, but it is well dealt with by the duo, keeping the flow going in spite of the explosive interruptions. If the show has any faults, its that the material is all a bit similar in theme, but really, if you’re expecting something other than songs about masturbation and penis envy, you might want to go back and re-familiarise yourself with the title of the show. In any case, there’s hardly enough comedy celebrating female sexuality out there to start with, so one comedy show chock-full of it probably wouldn’t hurt.

Although the duo’s gorgeous voices should – and do – take centre stage, and equally fantastic but woefully under-advertised aspect of Grand Ole C*ntry is the immense range of over-exaggerated and hilarious facial expressions made by both Katy and Marie over the course of the show. In addition to being talented musicians, both women are genuinely wonderful singers. Their songs are clever and catchy to the point that you will undoubtedly leave with a song or two stuck in your head, worried you’ll eventually end up singing it in front of someone you shouldn’t.
